Executive Orders

Image
On Saturday, August 8, 2020 President Donald Trump signed four executive orders to provide economic relief in response to the ongoing pandemic. Here is a breakdown of the four executive orders: 1. Treasury and Housing and Urban Development (HUD) departments have been directed to find ways to provide temporary financial assistance to struggling renters and homeowners. The order also directs HUD to do what it can to help renters and homeowners avoid eviction and foreclosure.  2. Moratorium on federally-backed student loan payments (and zero interest), previously set to expire September 30, has been extended until the end of the coronavirus crisis.  Student loans held by private lenders do not qualify for this relief. 3. Given the recent expiration of the $600 weekly Federal add-on to state unemployment benefits, a new $300 weekly add-on will be implemented, with the potential for an additional $100 from the filer’s resident state.  Extra benefits would be available th...

Here's Why You Shouldn't Rush to Apply for PPP Loan Forgiveness

Image
There is a lot of uncertainty and confusion on the regulations surrounding the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), and borrowers are questioning whether they'll qualify for loan forgiveness. For small businesses, the main concern is meeting the maximum loan forgiveness. However, borrowers shouldn't rush their PPP loan forgiveness applications, and here's why. More Time to Qualify for Full Loan Forgiveness New guidance has been released that allows PPP recipients to apply for loan forgiveness before their covered period ends, but doing this may result in a portion of the loan proceeds not being forgiven. Organizations have 24 weeks to use their PPP money, leaving them more time to take steps that will help them qualify for full loan forgiveness. In the calculations for forgiveness, there is a reduction in the loan forgiveness amount if you reduce any employee’s wages by more than 25% during the covered period. However, if wages are restored by December 31, there is a sa...

Employer’s Quarterly Federal Payroll Tax Form 941 has changed for COVID-19

Image
Form 941 reports federal payroll tax withholding and employer taxes on wages paid to employees. If you pay wages subject to federal income tax withholding or social security and medicare taxes, you must file Form 941 quarterly. Recently, the Form 941 has undergone changes for COVID-19 related employment tax credits and other tax relief. The staff at Wilson Toellner CPA is sharing with you the changes you'll see when filing the Form 941. You will notice the following changes: Include the Qualified Sick and Family Leave Wages separately on Form 941. You will only pay tax on the employee share. Report the credit for Qualified Sick and Family Leave Wages. The credit on the Qualified Sick and Family Leave Wages consists of the Qualified Sick and Family Leave Wages, Qualified He...
